The integration of physical light into planar art has a rich history, most notably championed by minimalist Dan Flavin, who mounted standard, repurposed fluorescent tubes onto walls and canvases to create geometric spatial effects. While groundbreaking, the medium has largely remained constrained by commercial, electrode-based lighting technology.
FieroGloW is working to push this lexicon forward by introducing bespoke, electrodeless plasma vessels into the high-end contemporary art space. Drawing inspiration from the structural complexity championed by artists like Wayne Stratman and the broader Plasma Art Alliance, this project seeks to mount custom TICP toroids and flasks directly onto fine art canvases. To prove the viability and safety of this concept, FieroGloW executed a proof-of-concept installation utilizing an abstract canvas piece titled "No," painted by Dr. Gloria K. Fiero.
Rather than mounting obtrusive hardware on the face of the artwork, FieroGloW engineered a concealed architecture:
Concealed Architecture: A low-voltage, high-frequency Class E resonant inverter was mounted seamlessly behind the canvas structure.
Through-Canvas Excitation: A custom induction coil was carefully routed through the canvas surface, allowing the drive hardware to remain completely invisible while projecting the RF field forward.
Wireless Plasma Display: Custom gas-doped plasma flasks can be safely mounted over the exposed coil, utilizing purely electrodeless TICP technology to ignite the gases without any physical electrodes touching the glass.
The most profound outcome of the "No" installation is the optical interplay between the plasma and the painted surface. Standard gallery lighting casts a broad, uniform spectrum over a painting.
By contrast, the FieroGloW installation utilizes exotic noble gas and metal halide blends, which emit highly specific, narrow-band spectral signatures. When these unique light frequencies wash over the canvas, they interact with the specific chemical pigments chosen by the artist. This targeted spectral emission excites the paint in ways that standard light cannot, revealing hidden depths, altering color perception, and turning the static canvas into a highly dynamic, illuminated installation.
